Russian
Wedding guests received small thank you
gifts when attending the traditional Russian
wedding of days gone by. Popular items
included small pictures, bud vases or other
tiny items. These were in appreciation of
their presence and well wishing.
Before the
bride and groom have their first dance, some
of the guests (usually kids) will 'steal'
one of the bride's shoes and go around to
the guests and ask for a contribution to
give the shoe back so the bride can dance.
Before
midnight two chairs will be tied together
for the bride and groom to sit on. The
guests will sing a love song while strong
guests will lift the chair and throw it in
the air several times during the song.
