Something
Old, Something New...
One of the best known wedding traditions is
"Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed,
Something Blue, and a Sixpence for your Shoe".
This superstition of the Bride wearing
something that fits each of these categories
originated in Europe to ward off evil
spirits.
Something old symbolizes a sense of
continuity, tradition and represents the link to the
bride's old life and her family.
Something
new signifies hope for the future.
Something borrowed should come from a friend who
is happily married.
This tradition symbolized the popular belief
that by borrowing something from a happily
married couple, good fortune would follow
the newlyweds.
Something blue signifies
fidelity, purity and love.
Brides of ancient Israel wore blue ribbons
on the border of their wedding cloths to
denote, love, modesty and fidelity. These
are ideals still associated today with that
color. Blue also denotes the purity of the
Virgin Mary and is the most popular of all
colors.
A sixpence in
your shoe is to ensure financial success in your
new life together.
PENNY IN THE SHOE
This is a European tradition to bring the
Bride good luck, fortune, and protection
against want. After the Wedding Day, the
lucky penny can be turned into a piece of
jewelry as a pendant, charm for a bracelet,
or ring setting. |
